William Byrd softball looking to make waves in postseason play

VINTON (WSLS 10 SPORTS) - The William Byrd softball team has been slugging their way to the top of the conference with a record of 14-3, but with big games looming, the Terriers hope to keep swatting the competition.

"We've got a great mix of power and speed, the most speed we've had here in my 16 years. We want to carry this speed and momentum we have going into conference play," said head coach Greg Barton.

This team came out of the gates swinging, literally. Six Terriers on the team are batting over .400, two of those players, are freshman.

"We've got Megan Grant and Sydney Burton, both freshman, that are producing. Megan is leading off for us and hitting over .400. When you have freshman who come in and contribute, along with good experience, you have a great future."

Megan is also the starting short stop and thanks to the support and encouragement of Coach Barton, has had a very easy transition to the varsity squad.

"I was really nervous at the beginning and he's just helped me in the spot that I'm in, and be comfortable where I'm at and be able to be myself in the field," Grant explained.

As the post season nears, the Terriers are hoping to face the 4A powerhouse and defending state champions.

"We really want to see Carroll County, you want to play people that we haven't played before so we can really make a big noise this year," said senior Amber Ewers, who is leading the team with a batting average of .481.

Coach Barton added, "We want to make a run we want to see Carroll County. They're a proven team and state champions and they're in our conference and we're looking forward to seeing them."
