CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS10) - Hundreds came out to honor fallen officers in the New River Valley Monday night at the 12th Annual Police Officer's Memorial Service.

Deputies dedicated the Montgomery County public safety monument to all rescue personnel who died while making the ultimate sacrifice to keep their community safe.

The monument is in front of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.  It cost $20,000 and took about six years in the making from design to a physical stone monument.

Seven names are carved into the monument.

We spoke with one family who lost a loved one in the line of duty and serviced as the Elliston Volunteer Fire Chief for more than 40-years.

"Driving down Main Street you can see his name," said Dale Wells King, who lost father in line of service. "It's over there on the other side. You could see his name. And to know that this county that he gave so much and to be appreciated means the world to us."

"It's a way to honor the people that's given the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives serving the citizens of Montgomery County," said Robert Hall, Montgomery County Chief Deputy to the Sheriff's Office.

For some, this day meant more than words can describe. More than 300 people came out to show support.
