The university only gives out one medal each year to an alumni who has made significant contributions to the university through both donations and service.

Davenport, Jr. says the moment was exhilarating and he is honored to have been chosen.

"Understanding how many other people were well qualified for this, to have been chosen by the people who chose my name is very humbling," Davenport, Jr. said.

Davenport, Jr. is a member of the university's Ut Prosim Society of donors and served on both the board of visitors at the Virginia Tech Foundation Board.
