UPDATE: Suspect hospitalized after Wytheville officer involved shooting

WYTHEVILLE (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting in the town of Wytheville that happened on Wednesday.

It happened at 1:39 a.m. in the 500 block of West Main Street.

A woman arrived at her home, saw a window open and other things that did not appear to be normal, so she called police, according to Wytheville Police.

When two officers arrived, they found the back door open and saw a man moving inside, according to state police.

The man then came towards the officers pointing a handgun at them. The officers took cover and shot the 60-year-old man, according to state police.

The suspect was taken to Wythe County Community Hospital, then flown by helicopter to Hoston Valley Medical Center in Tennessee.

One of the two Wytheville Police Officers was transported to Wythe County Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. As the officer was taking cover, he fell and was injured.

The homeowner was not injured in the incident.

At the request of the Wytheville Police Chief Rick Arnold, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Wytheville Field Office is investigating the shooting and breaking-and-entering.

Both incidents remain under investigation at this time.
