That is why the town is putting about $1 million towards a new park, which will feature two full-sized soccer fields, a playground, and trails.

The expansion is designed not only to meet current needs, but also to give kids more options for constructive entertainment.

"Sports are a wonderful outlet for youth because it builds camaraderie," said Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam. "It gives young people a place to belong."

Blacksburg is also scheduled to break ground this year on a $300,000 mountain bike skills park, which will be the only one of its kind in the region. The town is working to acquire the old high school site. That would give it 36 additional acres for field space.
