Salem Red Sox and Walgreens team up for Red Nose event

SALEM (WSLS 10) -  The Salem Red Sox and Walgreens are teaming up for a special Red Nose event.

Red Nose Day is coming up. Red Nose Day started in the United Kingdom. It came to the United States for the first year in 2015 raising more than $23-million to help kids who need it most. You can buy red noses, sunglasses, beads and more at Walgreens and make a donation. Half of the money will be spent right here in the U.S. and the other half will be spent in some of the poorest communities around the world.

-$1 provides a meal for a child living in a homeless shelter.

-$5 provides antibiotics to treat a child with pneumonia.

-$15 could keep a child off the street for a week.

The Salem Red Sox and Walgreens are teaming up for a special Red Nose event Friday, May 13.  The team's President and General Manager grew up in a single-parent home and says it was a challenge when his mom was working minimum-wage jobs.

"It's something that we've all as a family fought for years and we been able to raise ourselves up with a lot of great help from a lot of great people and that's why programs like feeding America are so important because that's how we were able to get through at times," said Ryan Shelton.

The first 1,000 people into the game Friday will get red noses when the Red Sox take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks at 7:05pm. Gates open at 6 p.m. Walgreens staff will sell red noses and take donations. Anyone with a red nose will be allowed on the field after the game to watch the fireworks and take a big group picture that might be featured on NBC stations across the country when the event airs live on WSLS 10 on Thursday, May 26th.
