When facing the defending 4A state softball champions you have to pick your poison. They return this season dominant on the diamond on both offense and defense.

The Cavaliers seem to have all the pieces to the puzzle for another championship run, one of which is sophomore pitcher Sydney Nester. She's responsible for ten of the first thirteen wins for the team.

Father and coach, Rick Nester said, "I've coached thirty-two years between baseball and softball and as far as having dominant player in control of the game I've never coached a player with this caliber of talent."

The NC State verbal committ holds an ERA under one, has allowed only 10 walks, and has 142 strikeouts. Perhaps what's more impressive is what's going on in the batters box. Nester leads the team with a batting average of .684.

"I focus more on situational hitting and zone in and setting a plan as I step into the batters box. I'm seeing the ball I'm working on that," said Nester.

She isn't the only one generating the hits. Six players for the Cavaliers are hitting over .400 on the season.

"With the number of girls that's hitting the ball the other teams can't pitch around one particular girl," Coach Nester explained.

Third baseman Gracie Davidson said, "We know that the only way we can make it back to the state tournament or even win is if we play as a team and bond together making sure our heads are in the game."

With all their success complacency could easily set in but the Cavaliers live up to a big goal each year...

"No one beats us twice and we don't lose two games consecutively. That's tough to reach and very hard to do," said Coach Nester.

The Cavaliers hope this season will end just like last year, hoisting the championship trophy.
