Verizon strikers hold rally in Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS10) - Union Verizon workers are coming together to fight for better wages and benefits. The president of a local labor union Communication Workers of America 2204 held a rally at Huff Lane Park Saturday.

The president spoke to union workers and  made claims that Verizon leaders cut health coverage to get union workers back on the job. Union workers said they are fighting to stop out-sourcing of jobs and to protect benefits.

"Give us what we're looking for, which is protecting our retirees benefits making sure we grow jobs and bring jobs back in here, instead of farming them out in the country technician jobs alike," Chuck Simpson President of CWA 2204 said.

Verizon said in statement they have a great offer on the table and that includes a 7.5% wage increase, excellent healthcare coverage, job security protection and continued pension and 401(K) benefits.

A spokesperson for the company said the ball is in the union's court to end the strike and come to the table with constructive negotiations.
