ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -   After more than thirty years a well know preschool director is retiring.  Valeria Brewer oversees the St. Philip Lutheran Church Preschool program.

The pastor says the church was one of the first churches in the Roanoke Valley to begin a church affiliated preschool more than fifty years ago.

"This is more than a job. It's a commitment and it's a calling and children are wonderful little people to work with," said Brewer who adds she will miss the children and parents because many of them are like family. "Everyone needs to realize that children do learn a lot in their first five years and we do our very best to try and nurture them and teach them the kinds of things that will benefit their education and their lives."

"I'm not just grateful for the work that has been done I'm grateful for the connections that have been made," said Rev. David Derrick.

She plans to spend more time with family and friends, join a gym and do some traveling with her husband who is also retired.
