ROANOKE (WSLS10)-- One house is destroyed and another has been damaged after an overnight house fire in Roanoke City.

Firefighters were called to the 500 block of Bullitt Avenue just before 4 a.m. for reports of a fire. Investigators believe the fire started at the back of the house and quickly spread upstairs and inside. The house is a total loss.

The three people who were in the house when the fire started were able to escape without injuries thanks to their dog, Elvis, who alerted them to the fire. Unfortunately, Elvis died in the fire.

When crews arrived, they found a two-story house fully involved in flames with two houses on each side of the home exposed. Thirty-two personnel responded to the scene.

The American Red Cross is assisting two of the occupants, while the third is staying with family.

The fire spread to a house next door, which was damaged as well.

Damage estimates are approximately $60,000.

Investigators are still working to determine what sparked the fire.
