DANVILLE (WSLS10) - The director of the Danville Farmers' Market, which opens for the season on Saturday, is emphasizing the importance of the market.

This week, Feeding America released new numbers ranking Danville as the second most food insecure city in Southwest Virginia.

Kenneth Porzio, the market's director, pointed out that the market offers fruits, vegetables, breads, eggs and meats, which are often cheaper than the same products at a grocery store and healthier, too.

He said the market accepts SNAP and EBT and even has a doubling program.

"You come down here and put $25 on your card, we double it and give you another $25. So, you have $50 to spend here at the market," explained Porzio.

The program is limited to $25 per customer per day though.

The market will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. every Saturday through October and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Wednesday in July and August.
