VHSL Changing Championship Venues

CHARLOTTESVILLE (WSLS-10 SPORTS) There were plenty of changes to VHSL State Championship venues after the executive committee meeting on Thursday.   The moves that impact SW Virginia the most---The 3A and 4A state football championships are moving from Liberty University to William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia for the next two years.

Meanwhile the group 3A and 4A Spring Jubilee events for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school year will move back to Salem after Liberty's contract expires after the 2016 Jubilee next month.  Those championships are softball, baseball, girls and boys soccer..and boys and girls tennis.   The 1A and 2A jubilee action will remain at Radford.

Ken Tilley, VHSL Executive Director explained today's moves.

" We were trying to do this economically.  We were looking at moving events around, for geographic purposes to balance the events, and not just go to the same site, over and over. And based on the bids that we received we considered geography, the quality of the facilities, the staff support and the community involvement and finances-those were among the factors.," explained Tilley.

Other noteworthy changes the 5A and 6A football games shifting from Charlottesville to Hampton, and  the 4A 5A and 6A state wrestling championships now taking place in Norfolk's Scope arena.  The 1A, 2A and 3A state wrestling titles will still take place in Salem.  It's important to note that the VHSL basketball and volleyball championship will remain in Richmond, but expect some 'supersite' changes. Salem, for instance, will host state quarterfinal and semifinal games..with the winners advancing to Richmond. The 1A and 2A football championships will remain in Salem.
