ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke Rescue Mission is reminding community members working on their spring cleaning to drop off unwanted clothes and supplies at its distribution center.

It works in a similar way as Goodwill. Donors will receive a tax receipt. However, the mission's voucher program gives free donated items to people in need who meet income eligibility.

Those community members receive a 30-dollar voucher to use at the mission's Thirft 460 store on Orange Avenue in Roanoke.

"To you and I maybe $30-dollars every six months doesn't sound like a whole lot, but when you're thrift store shopping and an article of clothing my cost a quarter or 50-cents it can go a long way," said the rescue mission's Director or Development Tracy Altizer. "When every person in the family has their own voucher, it can really get a lot."

So far this year, nearly 8,000 items worth more than $27,000 have been sold with vouchers.
