Southwest Virginia sees hunger increase in some cities

RADFORD (WSLS 10) - One in eight Southwest Virginia residents do not have enough food to eat, including nearly 49,000 kids.

That is according to the latest Map the Meal Gap report from Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

It shows eight counties and cities have seen a rise in food insecurity since last year. Those include Radford, the city of Roanoke and Danville.

Martinsville now has the highest hunger percentage in the region at 22.6%.

"We serve a prepared meal, and we've come to recognize that a lot of the population that comes in and dines with us are people that may not have the facilities or ability to prepare a home-style meal like we serve," said Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread Director Donna Fern.

The report also said in Southwest Virginia, a person needs $16.56 a week for an adequate diet.
