DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - On Monday in Danville, 25,000 pounds of documents were shredded, bringing our overall total to 979,000 pounds.

It wasn't businesses, but individuals who flocked to the WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thon in Danville.

"Was looking for something like this, so this gave us a great opportunity to come over from Martinsville to come over here and have it done," said Ronald Mateer, who stopped by Monday's Shred-A-Thon event.

He recently lost his mother-in-law and wanted to make sure her personal papers were taken care of.

"We had lot of items that were personal to her that needed to be disposed of in the proper way," continued Mateer.

He also brought his own papers too, including tax papers past the seven years recommended to hold onto them.

"Most of the time I grabbed a box and shredded it myself or purchased a shredder and of course by the end of they day, you've burnt that up, so this was really nice," said Bob Johnson, who had been waiting for the Shred-A-Thon for weeks.

"I marked it on my calendar and I've been aiming to get into the attic and this was a good reason," said Johnson

He cleared out his attic and reduced his risk of identity theft with one trip to the event.

If you haven't been to one of our Shred-A-Thons yet, we still have three more stops planned.

Monday, May 9, we'll be at the Schewels in Christiansburg. On May 16, we'll be at the Schewels in Lynchburg and the following week at the Schewels in Roanoke.

All three upcoming Shred-A-Thons last from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
