BOTETOURT COUNTY (WSLS 10) - "They say that the Mustang crossed the median and slammed into them. They're still investigating to find out what happened or if she fell asleep."

It's been almost a year since Jessica Webb lost the love of her life.

"My life started over. Everything restarted on June 30th, and it was a shock to everyone," said Webb.

Her husband Justin was on his way to work, but he never made it.

Webb says more than the other driver, she blames the road.

"220 is a cut through so it's got a lot of windy roads and people that don't pay attention, there are people that cut short and it will kill you fast," said Webb.

She says Justin isn't the only one she's lost to the windy road.

"We've lost a couple friends down there, and of course the man that was with my husband was our best friend," said Webb.

Webb says she's been hoping for safety improvements along Route 220 her whole life.

VDOT agrees, the work is long overdue.

Thursday, it announced it is finally taking action, with a $79 million dollar project.

"We're looking at doing, widening the shoulders, widening the travel lanes that vehicles would travel in, and actually making the distance between those 2 travel lanes a little bit wider," said VDOT Spokesperson Jennifer Ward.

All that work will span 6 miles of route 220, beginning in the Fall of 2017.

Webb says she looks forward to the completion of the improvements, hopefully making sure future drivers stay alert, and always arrive alive.

"It would help out other people. I don't want anyone else's family to feel like we did," said Ward.

The construction is expected to be completed by 2021.
