61st Vinton Dogwood Festival officially underway

VINTON (WSLS10)-- The 61st Annual Vinton Dogwood Festival officially kicks off on Wednesday. The five day event brings live performances, delicious food, carnival rides and even a parade to the Downtown Vinton Area.

It's an event that brings thousands of people to the area, creating a big economic impact for restaurants and businesses in Vinton.

Here's a news release from Vinton on all of the events:

We will kick off the celebration on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with carnival rides, games and food by Cole Rides.  Bring on your talent for the "Vinton's Got Talent" contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.  On Thursday from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., enjoy more carnival rides and live music from" Fuzzy Logic". On Friday from 6-11 p.m. enjoy carnival rides and live music by "Funky Bone".

On Saturday, April 30, we have a jam-packed day of fun activities, starting off with a 5K Distance Run. Other activities include a full day and night of carnival rides and games as well as a craft show, business showcase, antique car show, live entertainment on two stages featuring dancers, bluegrass, jazz and rock music, and festival foods including the return appearance by Texas Tavern.  The free Kids' Zone will feature a Youth Art Show sponsored by Eventzone, in addition to large inflatables, petting zoo, storytelling, puppets, crafts, games and prizes with the theme of "Things that Fly".

The crowning of the Dogwood Queen will take place on the porch of the Vinton War Memorial at 12 noon. One deserving William Byrd High School student will be crowned and receive the honor of riding along with her court in the 61st Annual Parade, which will step off at 2:30 p.m. The Honorary Grand Marshals, featuring several retired Vinton area principals, will be representatives for "Honoring Educators".  Kids and parents alike will also enjoy live music by the William Byrd High School Band, William Byrd Alumni Band, Staunton River High School Band, Virginia Highlands Pipe and Drum Band, a variety of floats, walking units, clowns, vehicles, organizations and much more!

On Saturday night, enjoy a concert by a regional favorite, The Kings 7-11 p.m.

On Sunday, May 1 the Dogwood Festival will finish with the carnival from 12 – 6 p.m., and live music by Christian Southern Rock group, Exonerated, from 1-3 p.m.
