BUENA VISTA (WSLS 10) - There's a new K-9 patrolling the streets of Buena Vista. About two years ago, the city's police department started a K-9 unit and bought its first dog. Now, officers are welcoming a new K-9 named Max.

For two-year-old German Shepard Max, it's the first time working in the line of duty. Working with handler Officer John Snider, this duo let us watch a mock drug bust scenario where the officer planted marijuana in a car.

After extensive training, Max's keen senses paid off.

"The entire month of March we trained every day, four weeks straight through all different kinds of scenarios,” said Officer John Snider with the Buena Vista Police Department. “You have to prepare the dog for anything you may encounter."

Trained to find narcotics, Snider told us Max is a good sidekick.

"When people see the dog they change,” commented Snider. “They realize the dog's there and change their attitude."

The department bought its first K-9 two year ago after the Virginia Attorney General granted $50,000 dollars specifically to start a K-9 unit. The police chief said the first dog was a test that proved to be successful.

"We found that it was,” said Buena Vista’s Police Chief Keith Hartman. “Traffic stops were being made and drugs were being found in some of the vehicles."

Walking side by side, this team is hoping to do a lot of good in the city. Snider said it's his first time caring for and handling a dog. It a lot of work and reinforcing obedience but, it's a unique bond that will continue to grow.
