VT students gear for annual Relay for Life

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech will host it's annual Relay for Life event on Friday.

Thursday, student volunteers passed out balloons on campus to remind people about the event.

More than 6,000 participants from 435 teams have raised more than $500,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Virginia Tech has raised $5,000,000 since it started participating back in 2001.

The school has hosted the world's largest number one collegiate relay for life event since 2009.

"It's great, I mean we don't really boast about it because it's all for a good cause but it is something that drives us to continue to do all the hard work that we do," Juliana Leckszas a junior said.

Relay for Life kicks off on the Drillfield at 5 o'clock Friday evening.
