CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) -- The Community Foundation of the New River Valley is working to raise $150,000 in 24-hours for a number of local organizations.

The history of Montgomery County is open to anyone who steps foot into the Montgomery Museum in Christiansburg.

"This is Montgomery County's museum," said director Sue Farrar. "All we have here is representative of and from Montgomery county itself. Folks that are involved all value the history."

Staffed by nearly 100 volunteers a year, the museum relies on donations for support and on Give Big NRV Day Wednesday, the rewards are potentially bigger.

"We wanted to have one focused day where all the community could come together give to their favorite organization and those organizations could compete a little bit and get some additional grants from the community foundation," said Community Foundation of the New River Valley Executive Director Jessica Wirgau.

The foundation started Give Big four years ago to offer people a way to give online to their favorite organizations in their own communities. Participating non-profits have a friendly competition over the 24-hour period to get even more than the donations coming in through grant money incentives.

"Those little incentives really matter to organizations and they know that if they can get an extra thousand dollars from the community foundation that the organization that they love is going to be able to do even more," Wirgau said.

It's a goal to do more to help the organizations and the community they serve.

"We're one of the smallest non-profits going," Farrar said. "Benefits are huge for a non-profit on a day like this."

Donations will be accepted until midnight Wednesday.
