Retired Covington Sergeant Darell Hicks organized the first in 1997.
It was a simple idea to love on the community and teach biking safety.
"Up until that point a lot of the kids thought the police officers were bad," Hicks explained.
"We were doing community policing years before it was ever title that," retired Alleghany County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Barry Rose said.
"It's a lot of work, but it's worth every ounce of energy that we got because there's no greater feeling and to see that child when a bicycle or some of the other gifts too," said current Bike Rodeo organizer, Sgt. Chris Fisher.
Organizers are set to give out 160 bikes, but they hope to reach a goal of 200 bikes by the event.
