ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -  A local author hopes her books inspire kids to read while learning at the same time. Mary Dalton lives in Henry County and wrote the "Rainbow's Promise" series.

Dalton started writing in 2010 and the caterpillar character grew. Now it's a series of four books dealing with bullying, patience, learning to fly, dealing with pride and learning the golden rule.  The author says she wanted kids to learn good moral values that she thinks are lacking in society today.

"If I child can read they can go where they may not be able to go physically and they can learn things that they cannot learn just on their own," said Dalton.  "If a child is enjoying the book and they're learning and they don't even realize they're learning at the same time I think that's a real good goal for them."

The books are illustrated by Stacy Moody, an art teacher in Henry County.  Dalton's next book comes out in June. The "Prince of Deep Within" is a mystery for third to sixth graders.
