Fire Chief Brandon Cocke says the crash happened when two motorcyclists, one traveling South and the other traveling North, collided head on. Cocke says a third driver purposely crashed his motorcycle to avoid the collision. That driver was taken by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

One person involved in the collision was taken by ambulance to Lynchburg General Hospital with severe injuries. Cocke said the third driver was airlifted by Centra One and taken to Roanoke Memorial hospital with severe injuries.

According to Big Island Fire Departments facebook page, a bridge along the parkway was used as a landing zone for Centra One's helicopter.

"Thanks to the Bedford County and Amherst County Sheriff's Offices for blocking both ends of the bridge so we could focus on the safety of the patients, and the helicopter crew."
