(WSLS 10) - This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The City of Roanoke will take time to honor dispatchers. There will be a week long celebration and a meal as well as recognizing Dispatcher of the Year, Mistine Traegner. Roanoke dispatchers handle more than 275-thousand calls each year.
This week is also National Animal Control Appreciation Week. It's a week to honor those who serve the public by helping animals and pets who are rescued from injury, disease, abuse and starvation. Earlier this month, the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution recognizing animal control professionals who serve the county.

Radford University hosts several agencies that help veterans today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Disabled American Veterans, U.S. Veterans's Outreach Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs will be there to help with filling out forms and talk about resources available.
Local elections are coming up on May 3rd. Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline to register to vote in that election. You can register at your local Registrar's Office, online at the state Board of Elections or at the DMV.
Part of Route 641 in Rockbridge County will be closed starting today for bridge repair. Crews will replace the bridge over Whistle Creek. The road will be closed from Route 60 to Route 673. Repairs are expected to wrap up by the end of the month.
The Bedford County Board of Supervisors holds a public hearing tonight on its budget for next year. Personal property and real estate tax rates remain the same as last year, but an increase of two percent is proposed for the Transient Occupancy Tax.
State Superintendent of Public Education Steven Staples will tour several schools in Henry County and Martinsville today. It's part of the departments efforts to identify best practices and innovative instruction. He will see how the district has integrated academics, technology and 21st century skills to prepare students for the local workforce. Staples will visit Magna Vista and Martinsville High, John Redd Smith Elementary.
