(WSLS 10) - The Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce holds its annual Legislative Wrap-up Breakfast this morning. Business leaders will talk about news laws affecting the business community and get a chance to ask question. Several members of the General Assembly will be there including Senator Steve Newman and Delegates Scott Garrett and Terry Austin.
Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute hosts the annual Life Science Forum tonight. The event give innovators an opportunity to meet and get ideas and possibly find people to work with. Topics of discussion include life and materials sciences and engineering.

The mayor and vice-mayor of Martinsville will be in Washington D.C. today attending an event at the home of the Japanese Ambassador. City leaders were invited because of the strong relationship between the Commonwealth and Japan. They will present several gifts to the ambassador including a handcrafted pen and letter-opener set from a local artisan Terry Mitchell, fudge from Uptown Sweets and a gift basket from Martinsville Speedway.

The Virginia Tech Center for Business Intelligence and Analytics holds a hackathon starting today. The event will focus on developing mobile apps to improve health and wellness. Students will work with on project that improve patient care, reduce costs and enhance the patient experience. Cash prizes will be give to the top teams. The event continues through Saturday.
Jefferson College of Health Sciences holds an information session on two of its programs today. Representatives of the school will talk about the Master of Healthcare Administration and Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management programs. Central Virginia Community College holds its annual Fall Enrollment Open House today. Local high school students and their parents can learn more about the school and its programs and financial aid as well as get a tour of the campus. Those attending can enter a drawing for a free three-credit class.
The McGlothlin Foundation will honor two top teachers tonight at its annual awards ceremony. Six finalists will compete for the top prize of $25,000. One prize will be given to an elementary teacher and another to a middle or high school teacher. The winners must use at least $10,000 on international travel and then apply that experience in the classroom. The finalists were judged on standards-based lesson plans with a 20 minute video of them teaching. Montgomery, Campbell and Bedford Counties are represented in the elementary category with Roanoke City and Giles County in the secondary category.
Child Health Investment Partnership of Roanoke Valley holds a free dental day for kids under the age of five and enrolled in CHIP programs. Dentists from Virginia Commonwealth University will provide free dental exams and varnishes. Representatives from the Bradley Free Clinic will also be there to enroll parents for free medical and dental care. More than 450 children received dental services last year.
