Online arrest records initially showed that Vick was charged with assault involving a hate crime.

However, Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston says Vick was arrested for assault on a law enforcement officer. He is also facing charges of obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.

Vick's arrested happened in the 800 block of City Center Boulevard near Canon Boulevard.

This is just the latest in a string of highly publicized arrests for the Virginia native. Vick was last in trouble with the law in 2013, when he was arrested in Georgia for driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a license and driving with an expired registration.

In 2012, the younger brother of Michael Vick was sentenced to a 10-day jail term on a contempt of court charge. Police charged Vick in January 2010 with driving on a suspended license, and court records show he failed to show up for two court dates in 2010.

Vick accepted an athletic scholarship to Virginia Tech in 2002, but was ultimately dismissed from the team. He was later signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent but was released from the team in 2007.
