Phillip Lucado has donated blood and platelets for 43 years.
This dedication to the Red Cross runs in his family. Lucado said that his father donated blood until he was 80 years old.
According to the Red Cross, platelet givers are particularly important because those donations have a short shelf life and mostly help chemotherapy patients.
“It gives me a good feeling because believe it or not, every once in a while a person that has needed platelets has gotten them and they have heard that I do give platelets and they’ll come up to me and we’ll talk about it,” said Lucado.
“He feels like family and we feel like he’s family, so the loyalty is amazing, said Christina Hatch, the chief development officer with the Red Cross.
Besides being a hero for cancer patients, he also said he’s an ambassador for the Red Cross. He often times explains platelet donating to those who are unfamiliar leading others to give.
