Some of the money would be used to compensate teachers. School Superintendent John Busher says are long overdue for a raise.

He say's financial hardships and a decrease in state funding is to blame.

So much in fact, he says these raises are necessary in order to be able to offer competitive salaries to teachers in the region.

Busher says some teachers have had their pay frozen for up to eight years and at this point compensation is beyond necessary.

Of the $51.5 million requested in the budget, about $1.4 million would be devoted to raises.

The county's salary scale for teachers ranges between $38,000 and $57,000 thousand dollars a year.

Busher says it could take more than just one years budget to make up all of those steps.

Although the school board has approved this budget , it still must be approved by the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors.
