Event to raise awareness on child abuse and sexual assault in Wythe County

WYTHEVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Family Resource Center in Wytheville is joining forces with local government agencies to promote April as being Child Abuse and Neglect and Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The organization will host the inaugural "Day in the Park" at 12 p.m. Friday April 1st at the Elizabeth Brown Park.

The event, which is deigned to raise awareness of the prevalence of physical and sexual abuse, will feature Commonwealth's Attorney Jerry Mabe as the keynote speaker.

In addition to Mabe, representatives from the Wythe County Sheriff's Office, Police and Fire Departments and Rescue Squad will be there.

"Day in the Park" will provide attendees with information on resources available to the community.

The Family Resource Center operates a 24 hour emergency helpline to provide support and information to victims of domestic and sexual violence as well as to their concerned family friends. The hotline's number is 1-800-613-6145.

The organization is encouraging people to wear blue on Friday April 1st to show solidarity with victims of child abuse and to raise awareness.
