Entrepreneur hopes to bring go-kart racing to Pulaski

PULASKI (WSLS 10) - The town of Pulaski is looking to develop a go-kart facility.

Matt Claus, the founder of Peak Creek Raceway, is still in the early stages of planning this facility. He plans to build the facility on a nine-acre field on the edge of Pulaski town limits, off of Interstate 81 at exit 94.

"My vision for Peak Creek Raceway is to open up a grand-prix style track here in Pulaski," explained Claus.

The total cost of the project is projected to be roughly $30,000. Claus says the go-kart facility could attract tourists to the area.

"This would be a great asset to the town community," continued Claus.

Claus has received so much support from the community that town leaders are willing to help. John White, the town's economic director, said once the track is built, it could bring extra money into the community. White also said it could make Pulaski a larger tourist attraction.

"We have two state parks in Pulaski County, the New River Trail State Park and Claytor Lake," said White. "I think it adds one more arrow into the tourism-attraction quiver. That's important to us."

Josh Flask, a local resident, said it will give community members more options for entertainment.

"I think it would give the kids a lot to do, and [they would] stay out of trouble... [Connecting] the community to everybody that's in it," said Flask.

Claus said the next step is going to the town council to see if he can get approval for the track to be built.
