MARTINSVILLE (WSLS10) - Students at Martinsville High School now have a better idea about what to do if a tornado hits.

The school participated in Tuesday's statewide tornado drill.

The tornado siren outside the school sounded for three minutes while a member of the Martinsville Fire and EMS was on hand to make sure everything went smoothly.

Andy Powers, Martinsville's deputy fire marshal, said it's always good to test the emergency systems and responses, especially after last month's tornadoes.

"There's been a lot of money and planning and time put into these systems, so this is the best opportunity for us to make sure that they are functioning and we can work out any problems before the accident does occur," said Powers.

Several other schools and communities across southwest Virginia also participated in the drill.
