Donate old shoes to help families in third world countries

ROANOKE (WSLS10) – New Life Christian Ministries in Roanoke is asking for your unwanted shoes. Volunteers are organizing a large shoe drive to benefit families in third world countries.

The shoes would provide a way for children to go to school, because they can't go without them. It would also provide business for families as they can learn how to fix and market shoes.

For every pound of shoes collected, New Life Christian Ministries earns money towards the construction of a church in Uganda.

"There's thousands of people who don't have any shoes that are walking in filthy water and causing infections and illnesses," said Fundraising Director Connie McCay. "So, that is one of the big things."

So far, nearly 1,500 shoes have been collected. The goal is to collect 15,000.

New Life Christian Ministries in Roanoke is located at 5745 Airport Rd. NW. Their phone number is (540) 563-4989.
