The mission is partnering with several businesses, like Fork in the Alley and Fork in the Market, which are donating a percentage of their food sales Wednesday.

The group with the most unique donors is Pathfinders for Greenways, Inc., with 184.

Both organizations used social media as a way to get the word out.

"We're thrilled to be participating in Roanoke Valley Gives day," said Amy McArthur, with the Roanoke Rescue Mission. "It's really nice that all these non profits can get together."

"We have hundreds of thousands of people who used the greenway each year, but we haven't really had a way to say 'don't you want to help?" says Liz Belcher, Roanoke Valley Greenway Coordinator.

As of 5 p.m. the online campaign raised nearly $270,000, far exceeding the original goal of $150,000.
