MONTGOMERY CO. (WSLS 10) - The Montgomery County registrar's office is expecting to have a 30 percent voter turnout by the end of the night for Super Tuesday.

Election leaders said Montgomery County typically averages about a five percent turnout, but those numbers are higher during presidential years.

The highest turnout Montgomery County has seen was back in 2008 when Barack Obama first ran for president. While the registrar said this year will likely not break that record, the national attention surrounding this race has made it one of the busiest primaries for this area.

However, hundreds of Virginia Tech students were not able to vote Tuesday due to confusion.

The Montgomery County registrar's office said it fielded calls all day from hundreds of students that were having all sorts of issues.

Some of them registered to vote in their hometown, and did not realize that meant they could not vote in Montgomery county. Others did not realize they had to send absentee ballots early, or that the deadline to register to vote in the primary was early February.

Some voters said this was the first time they have participated in a primary election. Others simply wanted to see change.

Voter Richard Cole said, "If you don't vote, you can't complain. That's the way I feel about it. I'm just doing my civic duty."
