DANVILLE (WSLS10) - The Danville Fire Department is offering free carbon monoxide detectors to residents in the city as bitterly cold temperatures are expected over the next few days.

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless and odorless poisonous gas that can cause you to become sick or even die if you consume too much of the gas.

The fire department has 90 detectors, which they purchased through a grant from Walmart.

Heaters, fireplaces, and even hot water heaters produce carbon monoxide, which is why the fire department wants residents to get these detectors as soon as possible if they don't already have one.

"In the event that this [detector] goes off," stressed Danville Fire Marshal Shelby J. Irving, "immediately leave the home. Immediately call the fire department. Let us come and come in with our meters and check out what you have."

Call the fire department at (434) 799-5226 if you would like to receive one of the detectors.
