ROANOKE (WSLS10) - Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is doing its part to raise heart health awareness. Staff wore red as part of "National Wear Red Day," which supports the American Heart Association. Friday, the hospital set up a health fair to promote healthier life choices. Attendees were able to talk to experts and visit a variety of educational booths.

Health leaders said both women and men should make sure they're getting enough sleep, know their family history of heart disease, and watch what they eat.

"If you're thinking of eating fast food, it's probably better to fast than to eat fast food," Elizabeth Vail, the Senior Development Director at the American Heart Association in Roanoke. "And, when you're filling your plate in the evening make sure half of your plate is green."

Exercising can also reduce your risk. The American Heart Association said people of all ages should work out at least 30 minutes a day.
