Salem Police arrest shoplifting suspect following police pursuit

SALEM (WSLS 10) -- A Roanoke man is facing charges following a shoplifting incident and subsequent police pursuit.

Around 8:20 Friday morning, Salem Police officers were called to the 1800 block of West Main Street for a report of shoplifting.

According to authorities, the suspect, Israel Antonio Cunningham, 27, of Roanoke, was seen leaving the parking lot and officers were given a description of his vehicle. Officers quickly found the vehicle nearby, but the driver refused to pull over for officers.

A pursuit began and eventually ended in Roanoke where Cunningham abandoned the vehicle in the 200 block of Westside Boulevard. Officers found the suspect after a brief foot pursuit and took him into custody. Cunningham is charged with grand larceny and felony eluding.

He's being held at the Roanoke County/Salem Jail without bond.

No one was hurt during the incident.
