It's made possible by a federal grant that is distributing $7 million to build a handful of centers across Virginia.

It will be free of charge for families who qualify. Parents must be working and fall below the poverty line.

The Early Head Start Center will serve newborns to 36 months.

Currently, the only licensed child care in the town begins at age two.

David Moore of Smart Beginnings New River Valley said, "It can be very expensive to run a quality infant and toddler program, and it's out of the affordability range for a lot of working families. This helps a center that wants to provide it be able to provide that service to the community."

The YMCA is hosting an open house for the center February 11th from 6-7 p.m. The center opens the following week. It will hold 16 kids, and there are still slots available.
