Five people taken to hospital after multi-vehicle accident

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Five people were taken to the hospital and multiple others injured following a multi-vehicle accident in Danville.

It happened at 5:55 p.m. on Thursday in the 1300 block of South Boston Rd.

According to police, a 2014 Nissan truck was driving on the wrong side of the road and hit a stopped car, causing a chain reaction crash.

Three other cars were hit from the reaction.

Police charged the driver of the Nissan, Steven Mayhew, with failure to drive to drive on the right side of the highway and driving a vehicle not under control.

Danville Police are investigating a traffic crash that occurred this evening in the

1300 block of South Boston Road.

At approximately 5:55 PM Police, Fire, and Rescue personnel responded to the

1300 block of South Boston Road for a report of a five car motor vehicle crash.

The investigation revealed a 2014 Nissan truck was traveling westbound on

South Boston Road. The 2014 Nissan crossed the median and was traveling

westbound in the eastbound lane. As the 2014 Nissan approached the

intersection of South Boston Road and Airport Drive it struck head on a 2002

Volkswagen 4 door sedan sitting stationary at the intersection. The impact

knocked the 2002 Volkswagen back into a 2004 Hyundai 4 door sedan. The 2004

Hyundai was knocked back into a 2002 Chevrolet Sport Utility Vehicle. The 2002

Chevrolet was knocked back into a 2008 Hyundai 4 door sedan.

The 2014 Nissan was occupied by the driver. The 2002 Volkswagen was

occupied by the driver and a front passenger. 20004 Hyundai was occupied by

the driver and a front passenger. The 2002 Chevrolet was occupied by the

driver and a front passenger. The 2008 Hyundai was occupied by the driver. The

occupants of the 2014 Nissan, the 2002 Volkswagen and 2004 Hyundai were all

transported to the Danville Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries

sustained due to the crash. The occupants of the 2002 Chevrolet advised they

were suffering from minor pain and would seek medical treatment at a later

time. The occupant of the 2008 Hyundai did not sustain any injuries from the

crash.

The 2014 Nissan sustained approximately $25,000.00 in damages. The 2002

Volkswagen sustained approximately $10,000.00 in damages. The 20004

Hyundai sustained approximately $7,000.00 in damages. The 2002 Chevrolet

sustained approximately $2,500.00 in damages. The 2008 Hyundai did not

sustain any damages.

The driver of the Nissan, Steven David Mayhew, age 39 of Ringgold, Virginia was

charged with fail to drive on the right side of highway and driving a vehicle not

under control.
