BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) -  Imagine a day where you never have to scrape the frost off your windshield on a cold morning ever again.

That is a day Virginia Tech researchers are working to make a reality.

For the last several years, they have developed a way to prevent frost from forming on certain small surfaces.

The next phase is to expand the project to larger surfaces like windshields, airplanes and pipes.

Lead researcher Jonathan Boreyko said, "Currently, for things like airplane wings or car windshields, we either apply a lot of heat, which takes a lot of energy, or we throw chemicals all over the surface, which is environmentally and economically costly."

The ultimate goal is to put this technology into a commercial form for consumers.
