RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Media General Chairman J. Stewart Bryan III has died.

Bryan, the former publisher of the Richmond-Times Dispatch, was chairman of Media General, the company which owns WSLS 10 and 70-other TV stations around the country.

He was the 4th generation of his family to be in the news business. Bryan's great-grandfather bought the Richmond Times-Dispatch in 1887.

He said he believed the press plays and important role in U.S. history and he was proud to keep an eye on government.

Byan joined Media General's board in 1974, and since 1990, served as chairman.

He was Media General's CEO from 1990 to 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Lissy, two daughters, and 5-grandchildren.

John Stewart Bryan III was 77 years old.
