ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The impact of the snowy weather Saturday was felt especially hard at truck stops along interstate 81.

Drivers were pulling off the highway by the hundreds to avoid some treacherous traveling.

The Lee Hi truck stop at exit 195 had to stop letting them in.

When it came to traversing the storm, even experienced drivers agree.

"It's been really bad," said driver Amber Simmang.

Simmang was working her way down from New York to Virginia.

"I've driven through all this snow, so I had to pull over and clean my windshield wipers off every 10 minutes," said Simmang.

Robert Berkstresser, the owner of White's truck stop, says Simmang and her vehicle aren't alone.

"We have probably about 5 hundred 50 to about 6 hundred," said Berkstresser.

Berkstresser says his crew is doing everything they can to accomodate the demand.

"We had 4 guys up all night last night and then we had another crew come in in daylight, and we have moderators and backhoes and bobcats and just try to get your staff and make sure you have plenty of salt," said Berkstresser.

Simmang says she wouldn't have made it much farther.

"I almost ran out of fuel and I ran out of everything in my truck, so good thing they were open, because I tried to stop at the one before here and the ramps were closed," said Simmang.

After finally finding this comfortable place to stop, Simmang and hundreds of other drivers are making the same decision.

"I'll probably stay here," said Simmang.
