WSLS Storm Team 10 – A weak clipper-type system is impacting us this afternoon and into the early evening, bringing us a light accumulation of snow in some areas (the mountains could see a coating-2", while the rest of us could see a coating in spots…maybe even an isolated area seeing up to an inch farther east). A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for areas along and south of Highway 460 until midnight tonight. Once the snow showers end around mid-evening, the rest of the night will see skies clearing. It will be another cold night with lows in the middle 20s. Tomorrow really is the calm before the storm. We will be partly to mostly sunny with highs in the lower 40s. So, no weather worries tomorrow.
Now, late Thursday night, say between 2:00a and 6:00a, we could see the initial batch of moisture moving into our far southwest counties. It could start as a wintry mix, but it won't take long to have a switch-over to just plain snow during the day Friday.  The snow should reach the Roanoke Valley anywhere between 5:00a and 9:00a.  And once the snow starts, it will fall through at least late Saturday afternoon. Maybe even longer than that. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for everyone midnight Thursday night until 6:00a Sunday morning. As far as accumulations, here we go:
Highlands/southern Shenandoah: 2 feet plus (24"+)
Lynchburg: close to 2 feet
Roanoke: 18-24"
NE NRV: 18-24"
SW NRV: 12-18"
Northern parts of Southside: 18-24"
Martinsville: 12-18"
Danville: 12-18"
This is going to be an enormous event for us…please don't plan on traveling from late Thursday night through at least Saturday night. Hunker down and stay warm!
Both Sunday and Monday look dry under partly sunny skies. It will not be as cold with highs in the upper 30s on Sunday and the middle 40s on Monday. We should reach the mid-to-upper 40s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both days will be mostly cloudy. Tuesday has the chance for some passing rain showers, but by Wednesday, we will have the chance for some snow showers in the mountains with rain showers everywhere else. This system during the middle of next week also needs to be watched.
