Money experts warn of lottery dangers

RADFORD (WSLS 10) - Wednesday night's Powerball winner will take home a record-breaking $1.5 billion.

That excitement has people buying tickets all over the country.

However, money experts are already cautioning the potential winner. One Radford University economic professor says the first purchase after hitting the jackpot should be a financial advisor.

"This has happened to professional athletes and others who've had a lot of money for a short period of time.," says Dr. George Low of the College of Business and Economics, "They don't plan for the future, and they end up in debt and sometimes bankruptcy because they made poor decisions."

The odds of winning are roughly one in 292 million.
