ROANOKE (WSLS10) – After 16 years of politics Roanoke Mayor David Bowers says after his term as mayor is over, he will consider challenging Republican Congressman Morgan Griffith for the 9th district seat.

Bowers says that he will begin a listening tour over the next few weeks to discuss the potential run.

"Before I make that decision, I want to bring up a few issues up front, one of which is the fact that I don't live in the 9th district," Bowers said.

Bowers says that Griffith didn't live in the 9th district until he decided to run. Bowers says that under law, the representative must live in the district he represents, and that he would consider that possibility.

Based on redistricting plans, Bowers says he believes in 2020 that Roanoke will be moved to the 9th district regardless.

Bowers traveled to Marion Wednesday to begin the tour.
