The Virginia Museum of Transportation has been working to secure a donation of the Roanoke Beltline from Norfolk Southern for several years.

This week the surface transportation board gave preliminary approval of the donation of the tracks.

Now, the board is in a public comment period. If no one objects, the donation will become official as early as next week.

To date, the museum has purchased property as well as three rail cars to get the project started.

Fran Ferguson with VMT says renovation of the track could cost up to $450,000.

If the donation is approved, it will still take up to three years for the excursion to become a reality.
