ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The Roanoke County Planning Commission is reviewing the proposal for a 158 ft. tall cell tower near Old Mountain Road.

People who live in the area are not happy about the plan.

The neighborhood is designated on the national and state historic registries.

Frank Longaker owns several houses there built in the 1800s.

He said he can't understand why the tower can't go where all the others have on Tinker Mountain nearby.

"It's very, very well-visited, and a cell tower that's 150 ft. high would certainly distract from, from the visual experience that people want when they want to come to a historical site," Longaker said.

The Planning Commission is reviewing the proposal and heard public comments Tuesday night.

It will be sending its recommendation to Supervisors who have the final say on the project.
