BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech is preparing to launch a study that could impact truck drivers and everyone around them on the road.
The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute just won a $2.5 million contract to look at sleeping patterns and regulations for commercial truckers.

Federal law requires drivers to log ten consecutive off-duty hours to prevent sleepy driving.
Many drivers have called for more flexibility. That is what they will get during this study, as they will use a "sleep when they are sleepy" strategy.
Researchers will then measure road violations, crashes and fatigue.
