Roanoke City authorities investigating inmate death

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office and the Roanoke City Police Department are investigating the death of an inmate.

On Tuesday, deputies found inmate Jessica Corinne Carter unresponsive in her cell shortly after 7 a.m. The jail staff provided first aid and notified EMS.

Carter was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and determine an official cause of death.

Carter was arrested and sent to the Roanoke City Jail on December 17.

She was scheduled to appear in Roanoke City General District Court on January 19, 2016 for several charges including drug possession, false identity to law enforcement and failure to appear in court.
