The Tigers rolled to a 7-1 conference record and finished 9-3 overall in the 2014 regular season. They capped the season with a 2014 Miami Beach Bowl win over BYU in double overtime--It was the Tigers first 10 win season since 1938. Memphis would conclude the season ranked #25 in both major polls.

Prior to Memphis,  Fuente was the co-offensive coordinator at TCU, where he helped develop Andy Dalton at quarterback and lead the TCU Horned Frogs to an undefeated season and a win in the 2011 Rose Bowl. He began his coaching careers as a quarterbacks coach and eventually offensive coordinator at Illinois State. Fuente is a former Oklahoma and Murray State quarterback.

The Hokies Frank Beamer will depart with a 23 year bowl streak intact. Virginia Tech defeated Virginia 23-20 in Charlottsville to extend the Virginia Tech domination of Virginia to 12 straight years.
